Years After Evan Spiegel Tried To Buy Secret, Its Co-founder David Byttow Joins Snap As Director Of Engineerig
Most recently, Byttow was engineering and product lead at on-demand delivery service Postmates, a position he’d held since May 2017 when it acqui-hired enterprise blogging service Bold, the last startup he launched.
Launched in 2014, Secret was among several anonymous apps, including Whisper, Yik Yak, and ASKfm, that gained traction (and concerns about anonymous cyberbullying) at around the same time.
It emerged with the publication of “How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars,” a book about Snapchat’s beginnings written by former TechCrunch writer Billy Gallagher, that Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel had quietly tried to acqui-hire Secret’s team before the app shut down.

Google Is Following Instagram And Snapchat With A Big Push Into Stories
Google is pushing deeper into Stories, the photo and video montages that Snapchat created and Facebook popularized after it copied the format into all of its apps.
Google, which has allowed some publishers to create Stories since February, is going to start using artificial intelligence to create its own Stories that will appear in Google search and image results.
At the start, Google will create these Stories around “notable people—like celebrities and athletes,” according to a company blog post — though eventually they will expand into other categories.
“We’re doubling down on Stories in search,” said Cathy Edwards, Google’s head of engineering for image search, at a press event in San Francisco on Monday.

Snap on Monday announced a new visual search tool for the company's Snapchat app in partnership with Amazon.
The visual search will allow Snapchat users to point the app's camera at an item and quickly find it on Amazon and buy it straight from the social-messaging app, the company said in a blog post on Monday.
The stock jumped about 3 percent on the news, and is now up up a little less than 1 percent on the day.
Snap's stock is down more than 35 percent since the start of 2018.

Google Displaying AMP Stories In The Google Feed On Android
Earlier this year, Google debuted AMP stories to compete with similar formats popularized by Snapchat and also found in Instagram.
The AMP story is a “mobile-focused format for delivering news and information as visually rich, tap-through stories.” Portrait images, videos, and infographics are all geared towards tall phone screens and are very consumable.
That portrait nature is conveyed in the Google Feed with the story card featuring a tall image that takes up most of the screen.
AMP stories appear in the Google Feed to the left of the homescreen and in the Google app.

Instagram Seemingly Nearing Launch Of New Audio & Video Calling Feature
Instagram appears to be preparing to compete with Snapchat’s most popular feature.
As you can see in the below screenshot, there are icons for both traditional “calls” as well as “video calls.” TechCrunch speculates that Instagram will implement the calling feature within its Direct messaging system.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Instagram adding support for audio and video calls.
But now that the button icons are in APK, which is publicly available but takes work to decompile and comb through, it’s hard for the company to deny the coming launch.

All The Social Media Opt-outs You Need To Activate Right Now
But the Vero micro-scandal serves as a useful reminder: It's always a good time to go through your social media app settings on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and all the rest to check how your data is being used.
Looking across top social platforms, like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Google, and, yes, Vero, here are all the check boxes you should probably click (or un-click) to stop your content and data from getting used, abused, and monetized.
Facebook knows a lot about you, but you can mitigate at least some of the constant tracking.
Within settings, you can get very specific about ad settings and decide how targeted you want ads to be.

Why Facebook’s Earliest Efforts To Kill Off Snapchat Completely Backfired
Poke’s failure was a huge turning point for Snapchat.
Snapchat is one of Facebook’s greatest threats, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg may be partly to blame.
That’s one interesting theory presented in a new book about Snapchat — “How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars: The Snapchat Story” — that came out this week from former TechCrunch writer Billy Gallagher. He was also a few years behind Snap CEO Evan Spiegel at the same Stanford University fraternity.
Rewind to late 2012. Snapchat, which was little more than a year old, was struggling to shake a reputation that it was only popular for sending inappropriate photos. Zuckerberg met with Spiegel and expressed interest in buying Snapchat; but when Spiegel declined, Zuckerberg launched a clone of Snapchat, called Poke.

Facebook Is Losing Younger Users To Snapchat, According To A Study
Younger people are abandoning Facebook and flocking to Snapchat at an increasing rate, according to a study released Monday.
The research, by New York-based firm eMarketer, said that, in 2018, less than half of Americans aged between 12 and 17 will use Facebook at least once a month.
EMarketer said it expects Facebook to lose 2 million users under the age of 25 this year and that Snapchat will pick up 1.9 million users within that age bracket.
Snapchat recently updated its app with a redesign aimed at making the service easier to use.

That lens is just one of the latest products out of SVRF, a tech startup vying to be the best search engine for immersive content like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

But AR experiences like Starman are exciting some Snapchat users and even former ones.

Wikipedia Wannabe Everipedia Raises $30M To Fund Blockchain Move
Everipedia Inc., a for-profit Wikipedia competitor, today said it has raised $30 million to move its “next generation encyclopedia” onto a blockchain.
The Series A round was led by Galaxy Digital’s EOS.IO Ecosystem Fund and included the Distributed Network Advisors Fund.
Founded in 2014, Everipedia has been described as “a more lively Wikipedia for the Snapchat generation.” At its base, Everipedia does share similarities with Wikipedia, since it’s wiki-based and editable by users.
The investment by Galaxy Digital is fitting because the fund’s founder, Mike Novogratz, a former Wall Street macro trader who recently raised $250 million to trade cryptocurrencies as well as make principal investments, is also a big advocate of the EOS blockchain platform.
