Samsung Just Confirmed Foldable Screens And 5G Phones Are Launching Next Year

Samsung just confirmed foldable screens and 5G phones are launching next yearChris Smith / BGR - 8 months ago
  • Samsung on Wednesday posted the results for its third quarter of 2018, revealing it hit a new quarterly high for the company.
  • Samsung posted KRW 65.46 trillion ($57.45 billion) in consolidated quarterly revenue, a 5.5% increase over last year, and KRW 17.57 trillion ($15.42 billion) in operating profit, up 20.9%.
  • Memory products and OLED panels for mobile devices drove Samsung’s third quarter to new highs, but memory earnings may drop in the coming quarter.
  • Smartphone sales will rise in the next quarter, but earnings are actually expected to decrease due to “increased marketing expenses.” Samsung named the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 mid-range phones as factors that would help it increase smartphone shipments in Q4.

Italian Watchdog Fines Apple And Samsung For Throttling Phones To Spur New Device Purchase

Italian watchdog fines Apple and Samsung for throttling phones to spur new device purchaseAndy Meek / BGR - 8 months ago
  • Apple has been a longstanding target of criticism for the way it throttles CPU performance on iPhone models with lower capacity batteries.
  • Of course, CEO Tim Cook earlier this year went so far as to promise that iOS would now allow users to disable that feature, but the company nevertheless has been targeted with a wave of investigations and lawsuits over the issue.
  • As The Guardian notes, the fine followed an investigation into accusations that “operating system updates for older phones slowed them down, thereby encouraging the purchase of new phones.
  • By way of giving more background to what led to the decision and ultimate fine, the newspaper goes on to note that Samsung told owners of its Galaxy Note 4 to install a new version of Google’s Android operating system which was intended for the more recent Note 7.

Google Assistant FINALLY Arriving For Chromebooks

Gabriel Brangers / Chrome Unboxed - 8 months ago
  • It has been just shy of two years since Robby waxed philosophic about Google’s Assistant coming to Chrome OS.
  • Uncovered by Chrome Story’s Dinsan Francis, the Google Assistant feature is currently disabled behind a flag in the experimental Canary Channel of Chrome OS.
  • After enabling the flag, I navigated to chrome://assistant-optin and the Assistant OOBE setup walked me through enabling the feature.

Samsung acquires network analytics startup Zhilabs to help its transition to 5GCatherine Shu / TechCrunch - 8 months ago
  • Samsung Electronics is betting that acquiring Zhilabs, a real-time networks analytics startup based in Barcelona, will ease its transition from 4G to 5G technologies.
  • The acquisition of Zhilabs is part of Samsung’s initiative, announced in August, to invest 25 trillion won (about $22 billion) in businesses working on AI, 5G, components for self-driving vehicles, and biopharmaceutical technologies.
  • In a statement, Youngky Kim, Samsung Electronic’s president and head of networks business, said “5G will enable unprecedented services attributed to the generation of exponential data traffic, for which automated and intelligent network analytics tools are vital.
  • Founded in 2008, Zhilabs’ products are used by customers including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Vodafone, and Telefonica to analyze and test network performance in real-time.

Google Thinks The Pixel 3’s 1 Rear Camera Will Beat Samsung’s 4

Google thinks the Pixel 3’s 1 rear camera will beat Samsung’s 4Jessica Dolcourt / CNET - 8 months ago
  • The Pixel 3's lone rear camera makes a brazen statement to any phone with two rear cameras or more: "Google's single lens is better than all your fancy cameras combined."Those are fighting words in a landscape where a dual-camera setup is now so coveted, even budget phones like the Moto G6 have two lenses for portrait photos.
  • Phone-makers have been known to reserve a second lens for the more high-end model of a set.
  • There are a few reasons phones have a second, or even third, rear lens.
  • Specifically, AI and machine learning are two cutting-edge efforts in helping computers make decisions on their own, for example brightening a photo based on dark weather conditions.

Razer Phone 2 Is An Impressive ‘gaming Phone’ — But It Needs To Be A Great All-around Flagship To Survive

Razer Phone 2 is an impressive ‘gaming phone’ — but it needs to be a great all-around flagship to surviveRose Behar / Android Police - 9 months ago
  • When the first Razer Phone hit the market in 2017, it was well-received in a number of ways, with highlights including the super smooth display, loud dual front speakers, and a strong 4,000mAh battery.
  • But Chan also noted that mobile gamers aren't just people who play shooters or the "hottest games" — it's just about everyone, even those who play games that are often dismissed as being silly or non-competitive, like Candy Crush.
  • Thus, with the second-generation device, Razer upgraded its camera — one of the biggest sore spots — by changing from Samsung to Sony IMX sensors and working on improving the camera software.

The Pixel Slate Is A High-End Hybrid Of A Tablet And A Chromebook

The Pixel Slate Is A High-End Hybrid Of A Tablet And A ChromebookNicole Nguyen / BuzzFeed - 9 months ago
  • Today, Google is introducing a tablet called Pixel Slate that, with the aid of a keyboard cover, turns into a laptop.
  • The Pixel Slate keyboard cover, an additional $199, automatically turns the device into desktop mode, with a full QWERTY “Hush” keyboard (named so because it types quietly) with backlit keys and a trackpad.
  • Like the new Pixel 3 phone, the Pixel Slate features a tight integration with Google’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
  • The high-end device, which is aimed at on-the-go professionals, is available in five different models, ranging from a lightweight $599 version with 32GB of storage and 4GB of memory to a $1,599 version with 256GB of storage, an i7 processor, and 16GB of RAM.On the lower end, the Pixel Slate costs about the same as the Samsung Chromebook Pro and Plus announced in partnership with Google last year, and on the higher end, about the same as last year’s Pixelbook.

Samsung Forecasts Record $15.5B Profit Thanks To Chips Not Smartphones

Samsung forecasts record $15.5B profit thanks to chips not smartphonesJon Russell / TechCrunch - 9 months ago
  • Samsung’s last quarter of business saw its slowest growth of profits in a year thanks to weak sales of its flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone.
  • The Korean firm said in a filing that it expects to revenue jump five percent year-on-year to hit 65 trillion KRW ($57.5 billion) with an operating profit of 17.5 trillion KRW ($15.5 billion), which represents a 20 percent annual jump and an 18 percent increase on the previous quarter.
  • Samsung’s pre-earnings filings are brief and don’t contain detailed information about the performance of its business units, thus we can’t assess demand for its high-end phones — which include the Note 9 — in the quarter that Apple unveiled its newest iPhones.
  • Chips account for some 80 percent of Samsung’s revenue and demand for DRAM, which is important in areas such as cloud, pushed prices up during Q3 but analysts suspect that the growth won’t last.

Samsung Says It’s Expecting Record Breaking Third-quarter Profit

Samsung says it’s expecting record breaking third-quarter profitMike Wheatley / SiliconANGLE - 9 months ago
  • The South Korean company said it’s expecting to set a new record profit of about 17.5 trillion won ($15.8 billion) in the third quarter, up 20 percent from the same period a year ago.
  • Samsung didn’t provide any breakdown of the driver of its profit or revenue yet, but CNet said the company has likely benefited from strong demand for its flash memory chips, which made up about 80 percent of its earnings in the second quarter.
  • Samsung is said to be the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer in terms of revenue, having overtaken rival Intel Corp.
  • What will be interesting to see is if Samsung’s smartphone business can stem the tide after seeing a 22 percent decline in revenue in the previous quarter.

Microsoft’s Surface Line Now Includes Headphones

Microsoft’s Surface line now includes headphonesBrian Heater / TechCrunch - 9 months ago
  • Granted, most of today’s big announcements were iterative updates on devices we’ve seen in past years.
  • Priced at $350, the wireless headphones should be competitive with the likes of Bose’s ubiquitous QuietComfort and competing offerings from companies like Sony and Samsung.
  • It’s still early days, and we don’t even have a release date (beyond “coming soon”), so perhaps the company still has a couple of tricks left up its sleeve.

Samsung Just Launched A Phone With A Triple-lens Camera, And It’s Not The Galaxy S10

Samsung just launched a phone with a triple-lens camera, and it’s not the Galaxy S10Chris Smith / BGR - 9 months ago
  • Samsung on Thursday came out of left field with a phone that’s not a flagship, but which happens to sport a few features unseen on Samsung flagship handsets.
  • Anyone shopping for high-end Android handsets is likely to ignore that product name because it screams mid-range and affordable.
  • The handset features a flat 6-inch Full HD OLED Infinity Display (2220 x 1080 resolution, an unidentified octa-core processor, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB of Storage, 3,300 mAh battery, and Android 8.0 Oreo.
  • What’s interesting about the handset is that its main feature is a triple-lens camera on the back that’s not available on any Samsung device right now.

Galaxy S9+ With Android Pie: Here’s What It Will Look Like

Galaxy S9+ with Android Pie: here’s what it will look likeJC Torres / SlashGear - 9 months ago
  • Having launched before Android Pie did, it’s not really surprising that the Galaxy S9 is still on Android 8.1 Oreo (the Galaxy Note 9 has fewer excuses).
  • Once upon a time, Samsung made it a point to visually separate itself from the rest of the Android brood.
  • Screenshots of an early build of the Android 9 Pie Samsung Experience 10 obtained by XDA shows the Galaxy S9+ adopting the rounded curves of Pie.
  • Samsung Experience 10 will also bring a new night theme and revamped system apps using the new curved look.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Review: Iteration, Not Revelation

Samsung Galaxy S9 Review: Iteration, not revelation Napier Lopez / The Next Web - 1 year ago
  • With the Galaxy S9 Samsung, set its sights straight on the Pixel 2 – or more specifically, its camera.
  • There’s more to a phone than its camera of course though, and that’s where the S9 – especially the smaller model – becomes a tougher proposition.  Lets looks at the specs, starting with the smaller model:
  • The larger model has mostly the same features, with the following differences:
  • Samsung was pretty much the only Android manufacturer making a smallish flagship anymore with feature parity.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ Review

Samsung Galaxy S9+ reviewBrian Heater / TechCrunch - 1 year ago
  • You probably don’t need a 4,000 word review to tell you that the Galaxy S9+ is a good phone.
  • Now that everyone’s got all of the Note 7 jokes mostly out of their system, we can mostly agree that Samsung makes good phones.
  • The “Phone Reimagined” signs that greeted us ahead of launch in Barcelona were suitably hyperbolic, but for better or worse, that’s the hype cycle we’re living in these days.
  • The fact of the matter is that the S9 finds the electronics giant mostly refining things on its flagship.

Consumer Reports Forgets The Google Pixel 2 Exists In ‘best Smartphone Cameras’ List

Consumer Reports forgets the Google Pixel 2 exists in ‘best smartphone cameras’ listBen Schoon / 9to5Google - 1 year ago
  • Most people can agree at this point that the Google Pixel 2 has the best camera in a mobile device today.
  • As pointed out by an eagle-eyed Reddit user, Consumer Reports posted a list of what it considered are the best smartphone cameras on the market today.
  • Hilariously, even the iPhones are out of order here, with the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus appearing below the iPhone 7 and 8 (which both lack one of the Plus’ cameras), and the iPhone 6S Plus from 2015.
  • It’s also interesting to see the Pixel 2 off this list after Consumer Reports mentioned on the device’s product page that its camera was “among the best.”
