How Echo Look Could Feed Amazon’s Big Data Fueled Fashion Ambitions

  • This week Amazon took the wraps off a new incarnation of its Alexa voice assistant, giving the AI an eye so it can see as well as speak and hear.
  • The Echo Look app is where users can view the style selfies (and videos) they’ve asked Alexa to record for them (she indefinitely stores a copy for Amazon too).
  • The app will also suggest clothes for users to buy based on their style selections — opening up another revenue stream for Amazon, and one that could prove pretty sticky if Echo Look delivers on its promise of furnishing users with a personal stylist whose killer feature is the ability to shop tirelessly on your behalf.
  • As I wrote in July 2015, adding a camera to Echo makes perfect sense for Bezos’ massive fashion ambitions.
  • Buying clothes is a recurring need; both a practical necessity and a way to keep up with changes in style and taste.

  • Google Fiber is getting ready to build a long-awaited network in Louisville, Kentucky despite recent layoffs at the ISP and lawsuits filed against Louisville's local government by AT&T and Charter.
  • "Great news today, with Google Fiber saying they now officially are coming to Louisville.
  • Fischer made a nearly identical statement in September 2015 when he said Louisville was "announced as [the] next Google Fiber city."
  • In February 2016, AT&T sued the local government in Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky to stop a new ordinance designed to give Google Fiber faster access to utility poles.

Larry Page Pens 2016 Founders’ Letter Recapping Alphabet And Machine Learning

  • Ahead of the first earnings report for 2017 this afternoon, Alphabet CEO Larry Page has penned a founders’ letter recapping the previous year. Providing an overview on the progress of the various Alphabet bets, Page also touched on machine learning and AI.
  • In 2016, the founder’s letter was written by Sundar Pichai, but this year Page wanted to discuss Alphabet in more detail. The Alphabet reorganization is approaching its two-year anniversary, with Page and Sergey Brin both having a “good time looking for new opportunities and managing and scaling our existing efforts.”
  • Meanwhile, the other co-founder is particularly focused at the X moonshot factory, with the waylaid Project Wing getting a mention.
  • Waymo and its self-driving minivans get top billing, with Page calling it an example of “how to set up new companies with a structure for success,” as does another former X project, Verily Life Sciences.
  • Other bets like Nest, Google Fiber, and Calico get a mention, as does investment arms GV and CapitalG.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Snaps Up Shares Worth About $9.5 Million

  • (Reuters) – Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey snapped up more than half a million of the company’s shares for about $9.5 million, a regulatory filing on Friday showed.
  • Dorsey bought 574,002 Twitter shares in multiple transactions at prices ranging between $16.47 and $16.74 per share, according to the filing.

  • According to the filing, Dorsey now owns about 16 million Twitter shares, which equates to a stake of about 2.2 percent in the company he co-founded.
  • Dorsey’s disclosure comes a day after Twitter reported better-than-expected user growth for its first quarter, following several quarters of stalled growth.

No 'Star Wars' Game Has Ever Looked This Real

  • In the last major "Star Wars" game, "Battlefront," you're given a sandbox of "Star Wars" characters and worlds to play in.
  • It's very pretty — one of the best-looking games on any system — but doesn't hold a candle to what one intrepid gamer turned it into.
  • No, that isn't a still from "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" — that's what happens when you apply a "mod" (modification) to "Star Wars Battlefront" on PC.
  • All of these images was captured by the mod's creator, Martin Bergman.
  • Bergman says that running the mod can be pretty intensive on your computer's processor.

Google And Facebook Scammed Out Of $100M But Say That Money Was Recovered

  • Google and Facebook were scammed out of a total of $100M by a crook sending fake invoices purporting to be from Taiwanese server supplier Quanta Computer, reports Fortune.
  • Over a two-year span, the corporate imposter convinced accounting departments at the two tech companies to make transfers worth tens of millions of dollars.
  • Google said that all of its money has been recovered, while Facebook said this was true of ‘the bulk’ of its funds, but questions are still being asked of both organisations …
  • The identities of the two companies were initially kept secret, referred to as Company 1 and Company 2, though Fortune notes there were some fairly big clues in the descriptions assigned to them.
  • When a publicly traded company experiences a significant event, federal securities law requires it to disclose this to investors.
