Select Page’s Latest Round Was Actually A Recap

  • A few weeks ago we reported on LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman’s investment in social justice petitions site
  • Since then a few people with direct knowledge of the situation have told us that the funding round was actually a recap at a significantly lower valuation. In other words, there was a dramatic change to the ownership structure and most existing investors now own very little.
  • It’s looking like Hoffman will have either majority ownership of the company, or close to it.
  • With the new structure, Hoffman should have enough power to block a sale, as will some of the other investors.
  • Several people close to the situation have referred to this as a “reset,” likely because recap carries a negative connotation.

    • Action Launcher has always been a popular third-party launcher; in fact, I’ve been using it almost exclusively for years.
    • If you’ve been a beta tester for Action Launcher like I have, a lot of the new features will be familiar.
    • The June update replaces the old Lollipop design for a more close-to-stock Android O aesthetic, made to replicate the Pixel Launcher as closely as possible.
    • Shortcut menus now also work in tandem with Shutters, which is Action Launcher’s way of hiding widgets within app icons.
    • The most significant update is that many of Action Launcher’s features, including some animations and custom settings, are now available for free users.

    • The winning group was Sportxts, a real-time sports news notification service powered by text messages that pulls live data from Sportradar and is powered by Zipwhip’s business texting platform.
    • “This enables people to receive sports data texts in a manageable form so they don’t have to look it up,” said Jake Grajewski, one of three Seattle-based Zipwhip employees apart of the team.

Apple Is Crushing The Swiss Watch Industry — And One Brand Is Particularly Vulnerable (AAPL, FOSL)

    • Tom Pennington/GettySmartwatches are taking over our wrists, and it's likely to get worse for traditional Swiss watchmakers, according to UBS.
    • The Apple Watch is bigger than every Swiss watch brand except Rolex, analysts at the bank said in a note on Monday.
    • Swiss watchmakers recognize the demand for wearables, but are reluctant to dive in because they would need to rely on the tech companies that make the microprocessors that replace the mechanical parts, UBS said.
    • Also, the high-end companies could hurt their status when they sell wearables cheaper than they would traditional timepieces.
    • "Market share may be further eroded for the Swiss industry as smartwatches improve in functionality," Brand said.

This Windows Defender Bug Was So Gaping Its PoC Exploit Had To Be Encrypted

    • Microsoft recently patched a critical vulnerability in its ubiquitous built-in antivirus engine.
    • A targeted user who had real-time protection turned on wasn't required to click on the booby-trapped file or take any other action other than visit the malicious website or receive the malicious e-mail or instant message.
    • Ormandy said he identified the flaw almost immediately after developing a fuzzer for the Windows Defender component.
    • "I took a quick stab at writing a fuzzer and immediately found heap corruption in the ERNEL32.DLL!VFS_Write API," he wrote on June 7.
    • "Fuzzing is one of a number of techniques we employ to update and strengthen our software," the representative said in an e-mail.
